How to Create a Shutdown Shortcut on Your Desktop

I must admit that sometimes I can be rather lazy…lazy to the point that I wont go to the start menu to shut off my computer, I rather have a button on my desktop that is always accessible that allows me to turn of my computer the minute I double-click it. Below you will find instructions on how to create such a shortcut on your desktop. You can also view the one pager by clicking on the pic tutorial icon. As always comments/suggestions are always welcome.

1.Right-click your Desktop Computer and select New > Shortcut from the drop down menu

2. In the browse box type: SHUTDOWN -s -t 01, click Next

3. Type a desired name for your shortcut, click Finish

4. After completing this step, you should have a new shortcut on your desktop that allows you to shut down your computer by simply clicking on it.

5. When done verify function of the shortcut by double-clicking on it.

A neat thing you can do after this is to right-click the shortcut and select ‘properties’. Then click ‘change icon’ and select the ‘power on/off’ icon to represent the shortcut. Now it really looks the part doesn’t it!!

Thank’s for this idea, going try it out, set it up, as to change the icon, it would have been helpful to have a picture of the icon so we know what to look for

Good tip, Kris. I’ve used this same method for years to create a desktop folder to store my most often used shortcuts, rather than the start button. I size it long and skinny placed on the left side of the desktop. Then, I put a shortcut into the startup folder, so it loads at startup. I also put other folders, like ‘More’ to store other frequently used stuff in.

  7. Alex says:

Look for the same icon that you see when you shutdown from the Start Button.

Thank you for your great idea. I have always been frustrated by the windows quirk of making one go to start so that you can stop! Your tip was easy to implement and works like a dream.

Hey guys and gals!! If you have a laptop and set your laptops to hibernate rather than shut down, create a shortcut with this:

    rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState

    :)
