Virtual Memory Low – How To Increase The Speed of Your Computer
Posted in Internet on
Does your computer display a message that says ‘virtual memory low’? This happens when the disk space that your computer uses to supplement the RAM is practically used up. Your PC needs to use the virtual memory to run such high space storage applications as Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader. When your machine does not have enough RAM or disk space to run these applications, you’ll get a message that indicates the virtual memory on your PC is low. This will result in your machine running slowly.
Freeing Up Space
It’s quite likely that you need to free up disk space on your computer in order to increase the speed of your slow computer. You can do this by checking the amount of free disk space available on your hard disks. Go to ‘My Computer’ on your PC and click on the icon that indicates the hard disk. Determine if your free space is 10% or less, in which case you’ll have to do something to increase it or Windows will continuously display the ‘virtual memory low’ message.
You can start to free up space on your disk by uninstalling programs and applications that you don’t use. Games and videos take up a lot of space and it’s best to get rid of these first of all. Then move on to software which you’ve rarely used and delete these from your system. Remember to de-fragment your computer so your machine will organize files in a systematic manner. The de-fragmenting process will take more than half an hour if you’ve got plenty of files, data, software and applications stored. Once your PC has fully de-fragmented and you’ve also eliminated your unwanted files, the performance of your computer will be immediately enhanced.
Upgrading Hard Disk
If your PC has 256RAM memory, this is not enough to run several applications such as Windows, Microsoft Office and browse the Internet all at once. The RAM will be too full and you’ll get a ‘virtual memory low’ message. You don’t have enough memory available to run the programs and applications at the same time. The virtual memory kicks in by copying the information to your hard disk and freeing up space. This then frees up the RAM to an extent. However, when your computer begins to freeze up and your screen won’t change no matter what you do with your mouse, then it’s time to upgrade your hard disk.
Usually an upgrade to 1 or 2 GB of RAM should be sufficient to speed up the performance of your slow computer. You’ll stop getting the ‘virtual memory low’ message displayed by Windows and your machine won’t freeze up and stall. You can continue working on your PC and enhance your productivity with a larger hard disk space.
Your computer will indicate you need to increase the memory size of your PC by displaying the ‘virtual memory low’ alert. Your applications and programs will run faster when you free up disk space or upgrade the RAM of your computer.

Good point, I have some things to add.
You should not put the visual memory and system applications in the same place. Because the memory is changing?it may create a plenty of fragments in the C disk.
You can set the visual memory in the disks that are large and seldom used like D and E. By doing this, your computer can run smoothly without being hindered by frequent read-write operations.
Or defragment disk is a good choose, you should really have a try.
Good point Kris. I have been getting this quite a bit lately. I should defrag more often I know but I have also done as suggested by Jeanne in comment 1 and have seen a good improvement. Will go away now and clean up the discs.
As usual, great tips. Is their a reason why you don’t increase your virtual memory through the settings. I have done this and it can work wonders. Have you had trouble doing this? I realize once they start adding even more memory hog programs the issue comes back, but if they are pretty much using the same programs, it is a lasting fix.
Anyway just a question for thought. I love your tips, they are so so good. And they really do work!

Hi Kris,
This post was really what i wanted to know, because since some time ago, the computer where i work is running so slow, and i have been getting the same message that indicates the virtual memory on my PC is low, everytime, however my c disk still has 30,4GB of free space and i don´t have many programs installed on that computer!!!!So i never understood that message, but i also never deframent my computer, and i am going to do that now.
I hope that will be enough because i didn´t want to upgrade my hard disk right now!!
Thanks.
Thanks, Kris!
As always it´s very important information of help……..thanks again
Hi Kris,
Like i said on my last message, i still had a lot of free space on my computer, however i was going to do the defragmentation of my c drive but when i started to do the program said that there was no need to do the defragmentation of my c drive ( i think it´s because i still have a lot of free space).
So what do you think i can do more besides upgrading my harddrive?
Thanks
Another trick to run your RAM better and faster is to make a little File in note pad…
1)Open notepad and make shure there are no spaces everything is cleared.
2)Type in mystring=(80000000)
3)Save as in ram.vbs on Desktop
Double click it on desktop and there you go, you will notice your computer is running much faster:)
Works with games if your having lagg.
You have to click on it every time when you start up your computer or you can copy the file to your startup folder in your document & Settings So your computer will do it for you when you start up your Computer ^.^

I have 1.5 terra of HD space free and 8 gigs of 600mgh dr2 ram. I still get that notice. What , if anything, can I do?
You can right click the “My Computer” icon on your desktop. Choose properties. Click advance tab on the system properties window. Click the Setting button on Performance. Click the advance tab on the performance option windows. Click change button under the virtual memory. Finally choose “system manage size” and click OK. This setting can be use for Vista and almost the same procedure for XP.
Patrick,
Thanks a ton! That little guy is great
Hi Kris,
Hey thanks for another great report. That is one problem that we all will face sooner or later if we use our PCs often. I like to run a disk cleaner when I shut down each day and that helps a lot by cleaning out unnecessary files. It is always good to hear from you Kris and thanks for all the help you provide.

Hi Kris and Rodolius
thanks for your messages. On monday i will put in practice your tips.
I look forward to see the results.
I will then tell everyone the results
Thanks a lot.
Hi Patrick and Rodolius,
I made the ram.vbs file, but i´m still not sure if the computer is better.I´m also with a doubt because on the youtube video i think the girl was talking about a ram.vbe file and not a ram.vbs file.Am i wrong?
Rodolius i also went to advance tab on the performance option windows. I clicked change button under the virtual memory and choose “system manage size” and clicked OK.However i notest that the button doesn´t stay checked after clicking ok, because i went there again and the button (“system manage size”) wasn´t cheked anymore. Why does that happen?
Thanks.
Hi everyone,
I realise that my computer is much better now, and that is because of the ram.vbs file i made, so once again thanks for the powerfull information you share with everyone.
However i still would like to hear from you about the “sistem manage size button” that doesn´t stay checked.
Thanks.
Good work Ana!!
I did see, that in the discription of you tube was written VBE,
But it really have to be VBS and I’m glad it does work on your Computer as well.
Great Article,
I find that the best way to speed up a computer is by defragmenting it.
You can use the Windows Defrag Tool that can speed up your computer by miles, I recently ran it on my five year old Windows XP Machine and now it flys!
Saves you money as you don’t have to buy a new computer.
