Hi Kris
As a result of this program my ebooks open much quicker. I just found Adobe 8 and clicked on it and the program did the trick.

But it didn’t work for anything else I have- Photoshop, XSitePro, Mozilla Firefox etc

For example, Firefox has a number of files which are .dll so I put those into the program one-by-one and when I ran the compression tab I just got errors. When I tried to insert the whole folder ‘Firefox’ it told me it wasn’t a .dll or executable file.

So, all I’ve been able to do is open my ebooks quicker. But that’s good. Sometimes it could take nearly a minute to do this. But I won’t bother trying to use it on anything else.

Sorry to be a bit negative.
Joe

Hi Kris,

I’ve got your PCSecretFormula, which is excellent, and which I can recommend to anyone – including the videos.

I haven’t really had a problem with anything in PCSecretFormula when I applied it, but Upxfrontend shown here, I’m afraid I must caution against, because every program I tried it on stopped running correctly and had to be uninstalled and re-installed. Sorry, but that was my experience. The idea behind it might be fine but the execution is dangerous to your PC. For my money, you should really take this item down until it had been re-thought.

I have a recent, decent PC with 4GB RAM and new hard drive and do all the good housekeeping things you recommend in PCSecretFormula, have bought some of the recommended stuff – Perfect Disk, Cacheman, Good Sync and so on. But I still had terrible problems with this application – so beware and err on the side of caution is all I can say. Try it on one program perhaps, before you go crazy.

Keep up the good work Kris! I follow your blog with interest.

Best regards

Les

Everyone I recommend you use this for Mozilla Firefox 3!

I’ve had great success using this tool. I noticed after compressing the folder,

my Mozilla Firefox load time was about 5-10 seconds quicker!

Thanks to Kris for a great tool,

-Cameron

This really works. But just wondering that when I enabled the backup option then where is the backup placed. Also how can the settings be configured to make the compression more effective and therefore making the loading even faster of programs.

THANKS
APPRECIATE YOUR WORK!

I do not get it when you click on the add folder option what do the + signs by the represent and can you add a file simply by inserting a file and where do you get these files?

This sounds very interesting to me I just need some help, does this work with cccleaner?

The Backup is very simple it just lacks a restore function. I hope the guys behind it will solve that problem.

The backup is simply a copy a the original file renamed from say myfile.dll to myfile.dl~ in the same folder as the original. To make a restore I had to delete the compressed file and the rename the original back. No problem with a smaller application, but Microsoft Office didn’t work out with UPX so I had to make a reinstallation and then delete all the backups.

Hi Kris, watched a few of your dvds and they were brill, however this program is not one of them.Downloaded and installed fine, did what you suggested, made compression best and clicked make backups. Tried it on all my start up items thinking it would make my pc boot faster, how wrong I was, boot up time on welcome screen went from 14 secs to 41 secs, then when my pc did boot I got the error message Cannot locate protected program data. Ran Misconfig and stopped all start up items from loading, boot up time was better 12 secs on welcome screen, but still the error message, tracked it to me anti virus which this program completely trashed, didn’t no were the back ups had been stored and firefox took twice as long to load. however I did make a restore point which I had to use to get my pc back to normal. I would recommend everyone to do this and only try one program at a time with this App then restart your pc,any problems you no right away which program is the problem.

Hi,
I tried the UPX program on JASC Paint Shop Photo album which is painfully slow to load. I got a number of errors during the process – consoleredirection.exe has encountered a problem and has to close – I responded to it and the compression continued. What was that about?

I could not detect any change in the load time. Anybody have any luck with hanksrunning the program for iTunes?

Thanks for all of your work.

kris

as usual i steamed in with both feet…the software works great BUT a couple of things to bear in mind

1) there is no info on how to reverse the process….

it’s actually not too tricky …if you go to the folders/files you optimized you will see that all original files have the last character of the file suffix replaced with a ~…so its a simple matter of renaming the compressed files …
ren*.dll *.dllcomp
and then renaming the backups
ren *.dl~ *.dll

do the same for exes and other renamed files….

2) Huge WARNING…maybe i am a bit of a donkey but i thought i would apply upx to all of the auto load progs…SILLY ME…outcome right mouse explore causes a crash and dr watson and killed my virus stuff…SO DONT APPLY UPX to Antivirus, Spyware, Firewall (Specifically AVIRA, Threatfire, and PC TOOL Firewall +)…I did and they got screwed …i fixed it by a combination of uninstalls and the renaming trick(?) above

Hope this helps and saves some one some grief….

there are alternative free upx front ends

try this page http://search.techrepublic.com.com/search/upx.html

Cheers again
